Websites are conversations

Purple OwlI was walking down a dusty road trying to get somewhere. I could hear the traffic from the nearby interstate, but couldn’t see any cars. I walked past an oak tree of some kind. The tree was aged from the weather and was scraggly from lack of care. Sitting on a low hanging branch, was a purple owl.

“Why are you purple?” I asked.

“Never mind that,” The owl retorted. “I’ve got something more important to tell you.”

“What’s that?”

“Websites are conversations.”

Conversations?

I was in a hurry and didn’t have time to talk then, and so I invited the owl over to my café. He arrived the following Tuesday. I brought a couple of tall lattes over to our table and he explained what he meant.

To be concise, as I know your time is limited, the owl told me that:

  1. The key to a successful website is intimacy.
  2. The most successful websites do more listening than they do talking.
  3. Non verbal communication is often more important than what is explicitly said.

I know this all sounds a little odd but a blog has to start somewhere.
